European Mediation Week, do you know the origins?

Mediation is today one of the most used tools for conflict resolution. It not only facilitates dialogue between both parties, but also works on active listening and promotes the culture of peace.  However, not so long ago it was largely unknown to most people. Do you know the origin of the European Mediation Week?

 Origins of European Mediation Day

On January 21, 1998, 22 years ago, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe approved the first legislative text on family mediation. This represented a great advance throughout the continent, since mediation began to be prioritized as an alternative method for resolving conflicts.

After more than two decades, mediation has managed to settle in all the country. Nowadays it is applied not only in the family sphere, but also in the civil, commercial, criminal or labor among others. Likewise, more and more psychologists, lawyers or social educators who decide to specialize in conflict mediation, thus increasing their job opportunities and promoting a culture of peace, dialogue and respect.

Only in Andalusia, in 2018 were they resolved favorably more than 1,400 mediation cases related to minors. Also, the Barcelona Bar Association has handled around 1,000 mediation cases in its first year of operation alone. This demonstrates the effectiveness of mediation in all communities in Spain.

Preliminary draft of the Law to Promote Mediation

Although this document was very revolutionary in its day, since it was the first document collected by different EU countries, citizens still do not know exactly the benefits of mediation. That is why professionals demand greater responsibility from administrations and governments to promote this tool.

Likewise, mediators demand that the Law to Promote Mediation be made effective in 2020. This law, among other issues, will favor the recognition of mediation among citizens, who still prefer to go to trial rather than reach a consensual agreement between both parties. Likewise, it will help decongest the courts, thus avoiding long lines and years of waiting to resolve a conflict.

European Mediation Week

The European Mediation Week aims to give greater visibility to this tool and raise awareness among citizens and companies about its usefulness. That is why, in addition to the European Mediation Day, the events extend throughout the week. In Spain alone, there have been numerous talks and tributes to mediators who have been working for years to peacefully resolve conflicts. In short, a week to show people that there is a more positive way to approach problems.
