In the times we find ourselves in, with the evolution that the health system is experiencing, I think it is also very important to talk about and develop humanization within this area.
What is Health Humanization?
The concept of humanization refers to the holistic approach to the person, to its holistic extension, where the biological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions interact. Therefore, humanizing assistance means making it worthy of the human being and consistent with the values of each person; and professionals have a lot to do with this experience.
Humanization has been a transversal value, incorporated in different strategies, programs, policies, plans, protocols... The importance of patients' rights as a basic axis of health care is highlighted by international organizations and in different regulations and legal standards at the national and regional level. .
It is an undeniable fact that in our health centers we have important challenges ahead: we still have a long way to go to shorten the distance between humanism and science. The traditional model has prioritized technique and scientific evidence over the human aspect, but experience tells us that “There cannot be dignified assistance if it is not humanized assistance.”
The importance of humanized healthcare
The pandemic of COVID-19 It has been, and is undoubtedly, a challenge for everyone. Patients and professionals are living a triple and sad reality: on the one hand, patients suffering alone; On the other hand, their family, also suffering, feeling helpless, far from them, unable to accompany them; and, thirdly, health professionals, struggling with the uncertainty of being able to cure and care for them. This whole scenario has caused the implementation of urgent humanized actions that have come to stay.
Highlight what they are fundamental aspects to promote humanized care, accessibility, promote access to the health system, avoid unnecessary waiting times as far as possible, facilitate and unify appointments, offer quality care focused on respect and active listening, pay attention preferential to vulnerability, offering adequate scientific-technical quality, joint collaboration, awareness, professional commitment, non-discrimination and equal opportunities, among others.
And as an example of humanized healthcare we find the health mediation services, whose objective is to create a effective and beneficial system for conflict resolution, both for the relationships between health personnel, and with respect to the relationships between users of the system and the professionals themselves, where empathy, verbal and non-verbal communication are facilitated, with measures aimed at promoting respect for dignity, uniqueness, individuality. and humanity.
In the formation of health specialty taught from the International School of Mediation we can continue working, strengthening and deepening concepts like the one I just explained to you, fundamental for the development of a quality and humanized profession.
