The reality of the prison environment

In this post we are going to talk about the reality of the penitentiary environment, that is, the prison as an institution, the place where people are held as a result of the commission of a crime and the sentence set in the penalty for a certain time, by the judge who was in charge of issuing the resolution

There are a series of phenomena that need to be taken into account, since all these circumstances cause a fairly significant disorder in the prisoner, such as, for example, the sudden change of a lifestyle, being deprived of spaces everyday life, the break with the customs and guidelines that govern our society or the life deprived of freedom that comes with entering an institution practically isolated from the outside.

For all this, it is in this case where the inmate has to try to adapt to survive, accept the rules that exist in the center and submit to them, which are based on and accompanied by a routine that is fundamentally characterized by the severity of these and the absence of motivation.

The person who is held in the penitentiary center, that is, the prisoner, has a feeling of submission, and consequently absolute denial of freedom of action, in addition to being limited to what the center's rules provide, he is treated as considered part of doctrine in a process of “egocentrism.”

In this way and to better understand this reality, it would be very interesting to understand the concept of prisonization, like that “process of adaptation and assimilation to the penitentiary environment, thus producing a decrease in the variety of behavior and personality of the inmates, unifying their customs, uses, habits and culture, as a result of their stay for a certain time within the penitentiary institution.” ”

Hence the importance of intramural work, which is greater than we think and which is not take advantage of conveniently two basic strategies to take into account in a prison intervention model, such as building an ideal environment that facilitates treatment and involving all personnel who in one way or another work with inmates. Mediation offers an alternative and ideal way to resolve conflicts in the penitentiary environment, also providing people trained in penitentiary mediation with essential tools to improve coexistence in penitentiary centers.
