Violence against women… and the wound in children

By Almudena Hurtado

Yesterday, November 25th, we commemorated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against WomenHowever, today we want to remind everyone that we cannot ignore children. Because violence against women also leaves its mark on them: sons and daughters who are direct witnesses to painful situations and who bear profound consequences for their personal development and mental health.

Romantic relationships formed during adolescence often reflect patterns learned in society and within the family. Therefore, it's not surprising that roles of aggression and victimization are repeated. Violence is not only silently inherited, but it also becomes normalized if we don't intervene in time.

The data is shocking: according to the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, in Spain, during the year 2024, 49 women were murdered by their partner or ex-partnerOne of them was a minor. Her alleged attacker was too.

Today, we want to emphasize that the fight against violence cannot be limited to a single day or a single group. Girls also need to be heard, protected, and supported.

Childhood and adolescence are crucial stages in the development of identity and future relationships. If children grow up in environments marked by violence, the risk of repeating those patterns increases. Therefore, early intervention is not only a protective measure, but also an investment in a fairer and violence-free future.

It is essential that institutions, schools, and families work together to provide safe spaces, psychological support, and positive role models. Only in this way can we break the cycle of violence and ensure that new generations learn to relate to one another with respect, equality, and empathy.
