What is BRAC International?
BRAC International is a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the development of people and communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease and social injustice.
They are based on the premise that people living in situations of social vulnerability can be agents of change if they have the tools, skills and hope they need to change their lives.
What would be these tools for change?
The experiences during the first years of childhood are essential for the development of the human being, they have a direct impact on social, emotional and learning skills.
Play Labs, BRAC's flagship model for early childhood education, offers high-quality, low-cost, playful learning opportunities for children ages three to five in underserved communities.
They start from the basis that all quality education begins with a good teacher. The program begins by training teachers, who come from the local community, to favor participatory approaches by emphasizing soft skills and recreational activities.
Children combine playful activities such as songs, dance, art and games with other basic subjects such as reading and mathematics.
This has proven to be a winning combination: BRAC elementary school students consistently outperform public school students on standardized tests despite coming from poorer families.
BRAC follows a holistic approach to lifelong learning, addressing educational needs from early childhood to the highest academic levels.
Where have BRAC programs been implemented?
BRAC programs have been implemented in 10 countries, affecting the lives of more than 130 million people. Their models are always adapted according to the country's context.
BRAC develops solutions in partnership with communities, building trust and prioritizing meeting local needs.
They have worked in some of the countries with the highest rate of conflict and illiteracy on the planet such as Uganda, Afghanistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Burma, etc. with positive results in all of them.
BRAC began its first international operation by venturing into Afghanistan in 2002. BRAC Afghanistan currently operates in 14 of the 34 provinces with programs in Education, Health, Skills Development and Citizens Charter.
